The Conference of the Birds is a new jazz musical based on the 12th Century Sufi fable by Farid ud-Din Attar. The story recounts the longing of a group of 30 birds, led by a hoopoe, who journey toward the mystical land of Simorgh. Each bird has a special talent and significance but, one by one, they want to drop out – each offering an excuse why they are unable to endure the journey. When they finally arrive in the land of Simorgh — all they see there are each other and the reflection of the thirty birds in a lake. The YSKP production of The Conference of the Birds is a musical adaptation of the acclaimed 1970’s play by Peter Brook. It will feature both hand-held and large puppets and have Sufi dances and movement inspired by G.I. Gurdjieff.

Darya lives with her father, Babak who is an inventor. He is never at a loss for ideas to solve even the most difficult problems using his logic and ingenuity. One day all this changes and he suddenly finds he cannot think of a single invention. His ideas are all dried up. Darya, who is not at all logical like her father, consults with her imaginary (but not so imaginary) friends who tell her she must take her father on a journey to the source of all Ideas: the Ocean of Notions.

Darya and Babak set out on their adventure, only to become misled by a mischievous and mysterious tour guide, Au Gali, who takes them instead to the Lakes of Mistakes. Having lost his fortune and his way, Babak despairs and becomes frozen in the Pout of Doubt. The expression on his face is so unpleasant that no one wants to look at him. Trapped in the World of Whatever, Darya and her father are forced to hide in a cave that becomes filled with the Haziness of Laziness Just when things look their worst, Darya is reunited with her imaginary (and not so imaginary) friends who help her and Babak to continue their journey to the Ocean of Notions. On the way, they have many adventures and make many discoveries about the practicality of imagination and the power of dreams.
